The Usefulness of theory

Communications theory taught me how the way you communicate can impact everyone around the world. There are so many different theories such as expectancy violation theory or cultivation theory, which hold very different ideas and meanings for communication. Learning about the different communication theories will help me professionally because now I am aware of how I can approach and interpret conversations with my boss, coworkers, and clients. Learning about the theories can also help me create new conversations with my peers about the mass media and how media can convey audiences to view an idea in a different way; agenda-setting theory. I gained a lot of knowledge from COMM 401 because now I can differentiate the communication tactics that are presented in front of me and how to respond to them.

Professional communication is a very important factor to me especially right now because I will be graduating this month. I have accepted and started a full-time job in San Jose, California and my professional presence is what is most important to me right now. My ePortfolio encouraged me to think about professional communication because of how social media outlets are very important in our society. LinkedIn is one of the top social media outlet for companies to look at when looking for candidates. My Wix and other social media pages are linked to my Linkedin so I am always very cautious with what I post online. I believe that every individual’s social media outlets should be professional at all time because we are currently in a technology-dominated society.

My website improved my professional presence because not a lot of college students or graduates actually have a Wix page. This Wix page will highlight my accomplishments and makes me stand out from the rest of the crowd of college graduates. An employer can go on my page and view my photos, and a little description about me to get the idea of who I am. There are a lot of perks when making an online portfolio because of its unique customization. Individuals can change the website’s layout, theme, and even add pictures and videos to show visualization. I really enjoyed the design aspect of my online portfolio and the blog section because of how organize it looks. Overall, I believe that it is great and it shows more of a dedication to your professional presence when someone is using an online portfolio. Not many have created an ePortoflio because of laziness, lack of care, or do not think it is required to have one. It is always a positive outcome when one shows dedication and effort to make them stand out from the crowd and will help them gain a lot of respect in the work place.
